LATEST NEWS: Stewart Sukuma was nominated for the African Music Video Awards in the Best Male Video category 2005. (The African version of the Grammys).

Born in Mozambique, Stewart Sukuma has won the much sought after "Ngoma Mozambique" prize for he first recordings, and has quickly become on of the most popular musicians in his country.

At the end of the eighties, Sukuma was already touring Europe together with Marrabenta Stars appearing at renowned venues like the Beat Apartheid! Festival in Berlin. In London, at the Hackney Empire, he shared the stage with Bhundu Boys and Mark Knoffler and in Africa with Youssou NDour, Miriam Makeba, and Hugh Masekela. Billboard magazine gave him same standing as Papa Wemba and other highly acclaimed African musicians.

In 1996 Sukuma moved to Johannesburg where he, together with other musicians from Mozambique and South Africa, produced the album Afrikiti.

Sukuma combines African and Brazilian Rhythms and sings in English, Portuguese and several African languages. His music is deeply rooted in the traditional culture of Mozambique, where he developed an invigorating and expressive style of his own reaching highlight in the African pop-music scene.

In 1998, he won the UNESCO Music award in Mozambique and became the first Mozambican to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Only six months after he moved to Boston he performed at the Houston International Festival sharing the stage with Angellique Kidjo, Abdullah Ibrahim, Oumou Sangare and Hugh Masekela.
